I love my job.  I especially love my job when I get to be with other creative types.

Lou’s Mom and Dad let me give them some ideas for the shoot, but then took those ideas and made them even bigger.  Love that.

Here’s Lou!

Happy birthday, sweet little guy!

andrew and julie | jill heupel photography

One of the perks of my super-fun job is getting to work with fun couples.

Meet Andrew and Julie.  They were so easy to work with.  They were natural and fun with each other and did not need much direction at all.  I felt like I was there just to document them as they were.

*The last three images are some of my favorite of all time.

Thanks Andrew and Julie!  I’m so excited about the next time we get to work together!

welcome matthew | jill heupel photography

Recently, my friend Gwen asked me what my favorite shoot of all time has been.  I have had so many special shoots, so this was a hard question to answer.  Photographing a baby take her first breath is near the top of the list.  Photographing a special announcement, like what gender a new baby will be, is super special.  I have had some very special extended family shoots that have become all the more significant to the family after a loss.

But all of these hardly compare to my time with a special family last evening.  I got to go to the airport and witness a family bringing their baby boy home from Africa.  Their journey was especially long and trying, so the ending was that much more powerful.  Mom writes, “Sixteen months after seeing his face for the first time, eight months after holding him for the first time, six months after having to leave him, two months after David left to bring him home – MATTHEW IS COMING HOME!!!”

So Thursday afternoon, we gathered at the airport.  Grandmas and Grandpas, friends, siblings.  We paced nervously.  We wiped our eyes.  We laughed with the children.  And then this:

Maybe it is because my own children are adopted.  Maybe because I understood how long this family had worked to bring their children together.  Maybe it is because the whole scene made strangers tear up.

Gwen, this is my favorite shoot.

Welcome Matthew!

R family, thanks so much for working with me and for braving the cold ghetto, early in the morning.  I think it was worth the cold!

sweet jacob | jill heupel photography

Since the theme for this week is blessings, I have another one that has been on my mind.  I have 2 studios!  2 great locations to meet customers in, to shoot in, to get away from  my kids so I can return phone calls in!  I have a studio at home and a new location in downtown Edwardsville.  While I will never consider myself a studio photographer, it is very necessary to work with new babies inside in a controlled environment.  So here is Jacob, the very first little guy who was photographed in my new, downtown location!

Sweet little Jacob, 8 days old.  <3
